English is a Difficult Language

English is a difficult language. For each spelling rule, there is an exception, such as “i” before “e” except after “c.” Yes, “pie” follows the rule. However, “height” does not.

English also has many silent letters. For example, the “gh” in “through.” English also has a long history which has contributed to these silent letters. For example, the word “knight” has a silent “k” in modern English. In Old English, you did pronounce the “k” and the word sounded more like “kneht.”

English has borrowed words from other languages, such as the French word “chic.” If we followed English pronunciation rules, we would say, “chick,” which is incorrect.

Even if you are a native speaker of English, you can still spend a lifetime learning the language. New words and expressions are always being created and grammar rules are always being updated to current usage.

What is an English slang term you just learned? How about new jargon in your field or industry? Comment below!

  1. Haha, I agree with you 100%. The spelling and the pronunciation are treacherous and the usage can be rigid, flexible, and unpredictable. And it has this subtlety that would throw one off. It is obsessed with its own polite irony that other languages’ straightforward descriptions can sound like jarring or provincial or corny. LOL. I don’t want to be too pessimistic since it is still a learnable language. I have long past the stage of being frustrated when I can’t grasp the hidden meaning behind what is being said. Anyway, my philosophy is that we all have our own style of using the language and I am chasing my own aesthetic understanding of it. I have to say this to keep my spirit up after spending years trying to figure out the native speakers.

  2. Lend me a hand (please help me). Let’s give them a hand ( either help them or applaud.). Hand that to me ( pass me something) Give me your hand ( let me hold your hand). Phrases with different meanings using the word hand.

  3. English is definitely a complicated language. I know I’ve learnt a lot of new slang from TikTok but suddenly I can’t think of any lol. I guess one that’s popular is “mid.”
