Powerful Persuasive Writing Tips You Should Know

    Updated post

When was the last time you saw an ad or read an article that persuaded you to buy something you didn’t even need? Well-crafted words can be powerful enough to influence your decisions. This writing skill is worth developing in your professional and personal life.

Here are some powerful, persuasive writing tips you should know to convince your reader to buy from you. First, let’s define persuasive writing.

    What’s Persuasive Writing?

Persuasive writing convinces your reader to side with your point of view. To achieve this, you need facts, statistics, and other research from credible sources. When your point of view is backed up with strong and credible evidence, your reader is more likely to agree with you.

    What Makes Persuasive Writing “Persuasive”?

Persuasive writing has three key elements. First, includes the beliefs of a group of people or a culture. If the writer seems to understand the reader’s beliefs, then the reader is more likely to agree with the writer. Second, the writer must appeal to the reader’s sense of logic by providing scientific evidence and facts. Third, the writing must appeal to the reader’s emotions.

If you can’t appeal to the reader’s beliefs, sense of logic, or emotions, then it’s difficult to persuade the reader to agree with your point of view.

How Can You Use Persuasive Writing at Work?

If your job is to influence people through the written word, then persuasive writing will be an extremely handy skill to have.

Persuasive writing will persuade your audience to follow your social media channels because people value the insights they get from your blog posts or articles.

Persuasive writing persuades customers to buy products and services. Advertising and marketing copywriters, for example, write copy for web content, email campaigns, marketing brochures, ads, and corporate brochures.

Persuasive writing skills are also necessary for press releases, copy for fundraisers, and articles about government policies.

How Can Persuasive Writing Help Your Business?

Persuading your customers and clients to invest in your products and services is key to your business’s success. Dr. Robert B. Cialdini’s research on the psychology of persuasion has had a tremendous impact on marketing.

One concept he has proven is the principle of reciprocity. Humans naturally want to return favors and pay back debts. An example of this in marketing is a business that provides advice to website visitors through free blog posts, training courses, and PDF downloads. The informative, free content increases the likelihood that people will pay for the company’s products and services in the future.

Another principle is social proof: whatever most people do, someone joining the group will do the same, even if the behavior doesn’t make logical sense. Consider how a worker may work a little longer just because everyone else in the department works late. And think of the last time you decided whether to give a new restaurant a try because of how busy it looked. If you read about a popular trend with your age group, you’ll be more likely to try it.

Scarcity is another persuasive tactic. An ad for “the last available room,” “30% off your purchase today only,” and “offer ends at midnight tonight” will create a fear of missing out (FOMO).

Persuasive writing will give people the push they need to decide to subscribe to your email list, buy two for the price of one, sign up for a course, or invest in your consulting services.

How Is Persuasive Writing Useful to You?

Persuasive writing can help you to get a job when you’re writing to a prospective employer. It can help you to get a promotion or raise.

Persuasion is also critical when speaking during an interview or conversation for a promotion. Whether spoken or written, words can be used to appeal to others and convince them to agree with your point of view.

    Key Takeaways

Persuasive writing uses psychology to give people that nudge to make a decision now. It wins you over with logic and appeals to your emotions. It may even play to your fears (FOMO) or convince you to make a purchase because of the free value you have already received. Persuasive writing creates action through the power of words.

Pets That Will Improve Your Life

    Daily writing prompt
What animals make the best/worst pets?

The question I’d love to answer is what animals would make great pets. I’ve been following some animals on social media, and they have taught me a lot about what pets can do for their owners. Here are just some pets that enrich our lives.

    1. Livestock Guardian Dogs That Protect

Livestock guardian dogs are excellent protectors. The YouTube channel Raventree Ranch showcases how dogs like Bo, Lily, and Judge protect livestock—including chickens, sheep, goats, and alpacas—from predators like coyotes. These dogs work as a team alongside Recon Cat and the border collies, coordinating their efforts to ensure that the animals are never left unprotected, even at night. What’s fascinating is that their teamwork and vigilance happen without human intervention.

    2. Parrots as Spies

Parrots are talkative companions, which means they can also be informants. Their ability to mimic voices and repeat conversations is remarkable in many ways. In one case, a parrot exposed a cheating spouse by repeating a conversation between the husband and his mistress. In another instance, a man discovered his girlfriend’s infidelity through his pet parrot. Perhaps most intriguing is the case where a parrot may have repeated a conversation from the night a murder took place—raising questions about whether it could be considered a witness.

    3. Ocean Creatures that Teach Valuable Lessons

If you’ve been following social media, you may be familiar with Leon the Lobster and Howie the Crab (see spoiler below*). Leon’s owner posts videos about his observations of lobster behavior. Howie’s owner/mom posts videos about what crabs eat, likes and dislikes, and crab behavior. These videos make you appreciate sea creatures as pets with feelings.

  • Dreaded Questions: “How Old Are You?”

Dreaded Questions: “How Old Are You?”

    Daily writing prompt
What is one question you hate to be asked? Explain.

If there’s one question I hate being asked, it’s “How old are you?” Throughout the different stages of my life, I vacillated from welcoming to not caring to disliking that question.

As a child, age is something we celebrate down to the smallest detail. You’re not just six; you’re six and a half. You’re not simply eight; you’re eight and three months. Every added fraction of a year is a milestone, a step closer to the next exciting stage of life.

Then, as a teenager, age becomes a frustrating boundary. It takes forever to reach the magic age of eighteen. You’re constantly reminded of what you’re not old enough to do—too young to drive, too young to go to late-night parties, too young for independence. The years seem to stretch endlessly before you, filled with rules and restrictions.

But then, something shifts. You finally reach the legal age for certain privileges—driving, voting, entering clubs. Suddenly, answering “How old are you?” feels like a badge of honor. You say your age with pride because it now represents newfound freedom. You can’t wait to show your ID card.

Yet, time passes, and one day, that same question feels different. When you realize no one is checking your ID anymore, you wonder—do I look older? Am I showing my age? You want to show your ID card to prove you’re still young enough to be questioned.

As the years go by, you don’t want to be asked about your age anymore. That question is a reminder that you’re older. Your parents are old. You’re not a kid anymore. You have your own kids.

By now, your experience and maturity should speak for themselves. And more importantly (unlike when you were exactly eight years and three months old), you have trouble remembering exactly how old you are because you don’t want to know your age! Chances are, at this stage of your life, you might have a friend who has been celebrating a twenty-first birthday for the past ten years.

Then, you hit the senior years, and it’s like experiencing the same challenges of a teenager all over again. Age once again determines what you can or can’t do but in a different way. Are you old enough for retirement? Old enough for senior discounts? Old enough to be taken seriously or dismissed as just “old”?

At some point, you might even forget how old you are. Your teenage years might feel like yesterday. Your cousin doesn’t live in the same city anymore – she moved twice already in twenty years. And you aren’t the youngest in your friend group – you’re the oldest. You’re starting to realize the passage of time.

Ultimately, no matter how old you are, the question carries weight. Are you too old, too young, not old enough, or not young enough? The question, “How old are you?” is asking for a number—but how you feel about it changes with every year.

    Thanks for reading!

  • Happy Lunar New Year: Year of the Dragon

Happy Lunar New Year: Year of the Dragon

Always have a reason to celebrate! Just one month into 2024 and it is another new year: lunar new year. It’s a time to think about prosperity, good fortune, and good health. It is also a time to visit family and enjoy good food (because we all like to eat).

Traditionally, the lunar new year is a time to pay off debts and clean the house. It’s a great reason to decorate the home and buy new clothes. Red is a popular color at this time of year.

It’s customary to have dinner with family. The younger generation receives lucky money in red envelopes from their parents and grandparents. Business managers may give bonuses in red packets. People indulge in traditional foods, such as dumplings and niango (cake).

This year, 2024, is the year of the dragon, more specifically, the wood dragon. The dragon symbolizes bravery, creativity, and innovation. The dragon is a lucky creature. You will see lions and dragons at celebrations at this time of year. People born in a year of the dragon (2012, 2000, 1988, 1976, 1964, 1952, etc) are charismatic, ambitious, adventurous, and fearless.

Even if you don’t celebrate Lunar New Year, it’s a great reason to reflect on your own traditions, especially around what brings good luck and bad luck. It’s a chance to think about what new habits you want to develop going forward because this is a time for a new start.

What traditions will you continue in the months ahead? What new beginnings do you want in your life? What new goals will you achieve?
