  • What If You Could See Your Future In 10 Years?

What If You Could See Your Future In 10 Years?

    Daily writing prompt
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Imagine being able to see exactly where you’ll be in ten years. You see vivid snapshots of your future life: your career, your relationships, your finances, even the food you’re going to be eating. That ability seems like one of the best things that could happen to you. You’ll know what’s coming and you can prepare for it.

    This foresight could be incredible.

If you’re destined for success in your career, you can reverse-engineer every step. You’ll know which skills to learn, which certifications to complete, and which companies to apply to. You’ll even know who to connect with—and who to stay away from. No wasting time climbing the wrong corporate ladder or chasing dead-end ideas. Your financial literacy would be your strong suit–you’ll know what to invest in, how long to invest in something, and when to take advantage of the best prices for homes, appliances, or vacation deals.

Your personal life could be a dream too. If you know how your relationships end, you can skip heartbreaks and toxic friendships. You’d avoid the wrong life partner and stay away from messy family drama. No messy breakups, no horrible family memories. You’d choose your friendships more carefully, hold onto the ones who matter, and spend your time where it truly counts.

But as pretty as that future may seem, there is also a major downside: you’d also miss out on something essential—the life lessons.

Maybe the heartbreak you skip would’ve made you better at communication in relationships. Maybe the job you don’t apply for would’ve given you a painful but valuable career lesson. Trial and error isn’t always pleasant, but the good and bad memories are equally necessary for growth. Avoiding pain is safe, but without the ugly lessons, we won’t appreciate the beautiful moments as much.

So where do I see myself in ten years? I wish I could see the future so I would know what to expect. What technology should I buy? Should I go on that trip next year? Will I have published my book?

It would be great to have all the answers today so I can better prepare for that future. Learn faster, love smarter, and coast through a succession of happy moments. But the journey there, through the path of the unknown, could be just as worthwhile an adventure!

  • Tips to Overcome Your Fears

    Tips to Overcome Your Fears

Fear can physically and mentally cripple you. For example, people have gotten stage fright and forgotten their lines while standing, momentarily paralyzed on the stage. Have you had a similar experience?

    What are you afraid of?

Everyone is afraid of something. The harder part is facing your fears and conquering them. The secret to defeating your fears is to break them down into pieces.

Here are four fears and how to conquer them.

Fear of overwhelm. In life, we can be overwhelmed by everything we need to do, from personal to professional projects. Selling or buying a house, starting a new career, or maintaining a long-term relationship. You are hit by a tsunami of questions – what do you do first? What if you forget to do something important?

The first step is to make a plan and break down a major task into a series of steps. If necessary, get help from a mentor or an expert or someone available. Ask for advice on what to do when buying a home. See if a coworker can help with a project. Just work on one small task at a time, instead of taking on everything as one goal.

Fear of things. Phobias are often out of your control. You just fear what you fear, such as spiders, snakes, heights, or closed spaces.

But if you arm yourself with knowledge, you can slowly start to chip away at your fear. For example, if you fear spiders, read a book about spiders and learn everything you can about them. The question is WHAT should you fear about your fear. Being bitten by a spider and reacting to the venom is a true concern. Being fearful of a tarantula because it is sitting next to you, minding its own business and enjoying the weather – that’s a fear in your mind. Knowledge is power.

Fear of situations. Rejection is a situation many people dread. You have no control over how people think of you. What if you tell someone you like them and they don’t like you back? What if you apply for your dream job and you are rejected?

To overcome your fear of these types of situations, put yourself in these situations more often. (This probably seems like a nightmare in itself.) Apply for jobs more often so you have more experience with resumes and job interviews. Work up your courage and be brave. Ask the person you like to spend time alone with you. See how they react. Then, eventually, work your way up to the big question: Do they like you?

Fear of failure. Everyone fears failure. It’s embarrassing, and it’s a terrible feeling to disappoint yourself or someone else. However, failure gives us painful but valuable lessons. Any business owner will tell you that the road to success is not easy and failure (or failures) is something you encounter on your journey.

To succeed, you develop mental toughness. When failure happens, ask yourself what you would do differently next time. What lessons did you learn? If you tried a new hobby (like playing piano) and failed at it, try again. (No one played piano masterfully on the first try.) Or you find you have played the same sport for a year and made zero progress. It happens. It’s a learning process. Sometimes it’s a sign to try something new.

We face our fears every day. This Halloween, take a moment to think about your greatest fears and how you will overcome them.

  • How to Create Success in Your Life

How to Create Success in Your Life

Are you the hero or the villain in your own story? Most people want to be the hero but it doesn’t always turn out that way.

Sometimes, you’re the villain. You become your own worst enemy when you tell yourself you can’t do something and you won’t succeed. But how do you defy that inner voice and outperform your expectations?

It’s easy to face a challenge we’ve conquered before. But how do we outperform ourselves?

The answer comes from a formula I learned in writing class. It applies to real life, too—it’s not just the stuff of fiction. But you might be thinking, it’s not possible to make your life turn out EXACTLY the way you want it to be!

Well, the outcome depends on the decisions you make now to achieve that success in life that you’re looking for. Here are the first three steps to take.

    Daily writing prompt
Describe a decision you made in the past that helped you learn or grow.

    Step 1: Embrace Change

Which would you rather be: a famous hero or an anonymous one? Everyone has their preference. Maybe you don’t even want to be famous and that’s okay. But are you happy with your life the way that it is? What would you do if you had a chance to make a change?

Change sometimes happens, even when we want to avoid it. Maybe you lost your job. Maybe you’re now a parent (and no one is really ready for that). You’re on a different journey than expected. What will you do now?

Don’t be the voice of self doubt. Your doubts are your enemy. Try the following tips instead:

    1. Focus on one goal.

Use the K.I.S.S. method (Keep It Simple, Survivor!). Each day, decide on one thing you want to accomplish and get that done. Go for a 15-minute walk. Clean one room of your home. Learn one new thing from one YouTube video.

    2. Challenge yourself.

Don’t accept things as they are. If you lose your job, find another one. (That suggestion is obvious, but the hard part is staying motivated to do this.) You can change your world the way it is right now. Be ready to climb a steep mountain though. Change isn’t easy.

    Step 2: Define Your Journey

Your ability to succeed and achieve your dreams depends greatly on your choices. It becomes your identity.

But what if you want to change where your life is headed right now? For example, if you want to change your career, you could take these steps:

    1. Upgrade your skills.

You can take courses, watch free videos, network with people, get advice and information, or find a mentor. This advice also applies to other aspects of life, like improving relationships and improving at hobbies.

    2. Change your situation.

Change is good. If your career isn’t headed in the right direction, consider changing jobs. If life isn’t what you expected, make new friends, visit new places, or change your focus.

Step 3: Define Your World – Create Your Boundaries

Creating your world may sound like fiction. In this case, it isn’t. Like they say, the world in your mind is the world you project on your reality.

If your inside voice – that voice of doubt – says you can’t do it, then the reality is you won’t. (Not saying you can fly if you put your mind to it – just saying if you set attainable goals, you can attain them.) So how will you see your world when you wake up tomorrow? How can you apply the following tips to define your life?

    1. Adapt to a new reality.

If your circumstances change, make adaptations so your new reality will work out. If you get a pay cut, adjust your budget and set goals to improve your situation.

    2. Grow stronger and build on what you have.

How can you build on your current skill set? What skills can you improve to do your current job more effectively? Do you have skills that are transferable to a new career?

    Summary

You might not be a superhero, but you are still the hero on your journey. Your skills and mindset define the boundaries of your world and the path you’re headed for your future. We are like the heroes we read about in books and watch in movies.

Challenge yourself to complete a goal, upgrade your skills, or redefine yourself. Heroes don’t achieve great things by staying comfortable. So, what is your next big step in your journey? Comment below.
