How Often Do You Say Hello?

Some random trivia I came across today: the song “Hello My Baby” was meant to poke fun at some trendy slang from the time. That new word was “Hello.” Alexander Graham Bell suggested “Ahoy!” as the proper way to answer this new invention called the telephone. Instead, people were taught that “hello” was the proper way to answer the phone. The song (shown below) made fun of how people sounded when answering phones was still a new phenomenon. How far we’ve come since then! Hello is now just a regular part of the English language.

It’s like how “goodbye” started out as slang but became so popular. I think when the phone was first invented, “ahoy-hoy” was thought to be the correct way to answer calls according to Bell. It’s so interesting how it evolved into “hello” and now saying “hello” is the most normal thing. Although, to be honest I still prefer “ahoy-hoy” lol.

Yes, “ahoy” was the the suggested answer. Funny how language evolved so we could use a technological device.

Yeah, it’s so interesting to learn how things evolved to where they are now. And how they may evolve in the future.

True. Consider all the abbreviations we use when texting people, like TTYL or LOL. Back when people handwrote letters to each other, they wouldn’t have understood those terms.

Yeah, or the fact that emojis have become so big that even with no words we understand what the emoji is.

True. Emojis give new meaning to one word replies.

I just googled ahoy and it is a valid word in English, Spanish, and French. Unbelievable. LOL. Thank you for sharing. I guess “hello” and “OK” have become quite universal. Different cultures have different greetings…

Yes, some words have incredibly become universal. For example, I’ve heard “hello” in countries where the main language isn’t English.

I’ve heard people reply with “hey” and “yeah” instead of Hello.
